Local prep coaches look ahead to this week’s games

Erik Terry, Irvine

Last week’s game (42-14 loss to Troy): We did not have our team ready to play, which is 100 percent on my shoulders, and spotted them 26 points before we finally woke up. Troy has the best team speed we have seen all season. Our players were resilient and we battled back to get two scores in the second quarter. After halftime we played very tough defensively and held them to just a field goal in the third quarter. Unfortunately we had a lot of trouble finishing offensive drives in the red zone, which kept us from closing the gap.

Offensive players of the week: On offense Joseph Carter tied a school single game record with 26 completions. His favorite targets were Jonathan Garcia and Trent Colbert who accounted for 18 of those receptions.

Defensive players of the game: Luke Coleman up front and Curtis Jackson on the back end made a lot of tackles. Ethan Dossett also did a nice job in the secondary containing Troy’s best receiver from getting any big plays and he recovered a fumble.

Our brightest spot on special teams was Curtis Jackson’s 70-yard kickoff return.

This week’s game (7 p.m. Friday vs. Northwood at Irvine Stadium): Northwood is a hungry group who play tenacious defense. With the exception of their last preseason game they were giving up an average of 11 points to some very good teams. Coach [Dean] Toohey and Coach [J.C.] Clarke are great defensive minded coaches and they love to pressure you. On offense they have another athletic quarterback and some gifted wide receivers. Their offensive line also has some good size. This will be a pivotal game to start the league season.

Marcello Giuliano, Beckman

Last week’s game (61-24 loss to San Juan Hills): Although the game ended with a lopsided score, our team was able to improve in several areas: we took better care of the ball offensively, we improved in the kick game, and we performed better in one-on-one coverage in the secondary. Clearly, we need to continue to address late-game performance.

Offensive player of the week: The offense was led by a terrific passing performance by Dean Nagle, who completed 59 percent of his throws for over 340 yards.

Defensive player of the week: The defense was led by sophomore cornerback Matt McLain who recorded two interceptions, including one for a score. Adam Sikes was a big part of the improvement in our special teams with his solid performance as a return man.

This week’s game (Friday vs. University at Tustin): As coach [Mark] Cunningham has been saying all along, this is the best University team in several years. Not only are they good, but they play with high emotion and confidence. On defense they are fast and physical, creating many turnovers and big hits. On offense, they present so many problems through formation and misdirection combined with big play passing capability. This will be a test of not only our discipline, but also our maturity as a team.

Mark Cunningham, University

Last week’s game: (49-15 victory over Sage Hill).

Defensive player of the game: The defensive player of the game was Hamza Diab. His strong play has been a cornerstone for the defensive line.

Offensive player of the game: On offense, Zach Taha had another great night blocking, and earned himself offensive player of the game honors.

Special teams player of the game: Punt returner Jalen Robertson had two fumble recoveries and a solo tackle on kick-off and punt, to lock up special teams player of the game.

This week’s game (Beckman, 7 p.m. Friday at Tustin): Beckman will be the toughest opponent we have faced this year. They have a big and powerful offensive and defensive line. Their defense is aggressive and their offense is multidimensional. They have speed at their skill positions.

Brett Mertens, Crean Lutheran

Last week’s game (a 41-21 win over Capo Valley Christian): I thought we played very well last week, and we were very excited to come out on top against a very good CVCS team. We were able to successfully limit some of their big plays and our offense did a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage and running the football when we needed to.

Players of the week: Daniel Ruiz played a great game defensively with four tackles.. Ruiz spent most of the night matched up on CVCS best player and was a key reason we were able to limit him to two receptions. Ruiz also had a 58 yard kick return in the third quarter which set up a touchdown. Offensively, Tanner Atkinson rushed 19 times for 76 yards and four touchdowns.

This week’s game (7 tonight vs. Sage Hill at Irvine Stadium, homecoming): This is our homecoming game and will be a very fun night for the Crean Lutheran community. Sage Hill has some very talented players, especially at receiver, so hopefully we can contain those guys early and wear them out with our depth and physical play.

Rick Gibson, Woodbridge

(Woodbridge had a bye last week)

This week (7 p.m. Friday vs. Corona del Mar, at University): We have to limit our mistakes and play our best game.

Dean Toohey, Northwood

(Northwood had a bye last week)

This week (Friday vs. Irvine at Irvine Stadium): We play a very well coached Irvine team that that does a great job executing their game plan. It is the start of the very tough Pacific Coast League schedule.

Gas drops below $3 a gallon

Gas prices have dropped below $3 a gallon and consumers may be able to breathe a sign of relief as analysts predict they will hold steady – for now.

In Orange County on Thursday, a gallon of gasoline cost an average $2.99, more than a dollar below the $4.28 high seen July 16.

The highs seen this summer were the result of a supply shortage that created a price spike.

Alison Mac, a petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, expects gas prices to drop to as low as $2.70 a gallon by the end of the year.

Jeffrey Spring, a spokesman for the Automobile Club of Southern California, thinks prices will stay closer to $3 a gallon. Gas prices are evening out, decreasing only around a penny a day, he said.

The fluctuating cost of crude oil is contributing to a slight see-saw in gas prices. In two days, the average price of gas ticked up a penny as crude oil climbed more than a dollar.

Benchmark U.S. oil rose Thursday to $1.62, or 3.4 percent, at $49.43 a barrel in New York.

On Nov. 1, California switches to a winter blend of gasoline, which is cheaper to produce than the summer blend currently in use.

The ExxonMobil Torrance refinery, which has been down since February, was recently purchased by a New Jersey-based oil refining company. Mac called this “great news for consumers. The refinery will be up and running sooner than later.”

The new ownership does not go into affect until the facility is fixed. Spring thinks this won’t be until February.

With today’s low gas prices, consumers are starting to see a wider range of prices at the pump.

“When wholesale prices are cheaper, retailers have more flexibility to make a bigger profit and you will see a wider range of prices,” Mac said.

Irvine Cattle ranch Water Area, which serves about 386,000 clients, was needed to reduce 16 percent. In August, the district reported it saved 17.8 percent.

As part of a statewide mandate to reduce water use in response to the four-year drought, regulators are requiring cities to reduce by a mandated percent between June and February, compared to the exact same duration two years earlier. As wintertime techniques, cutting water use will certainly be harder as well as harder, baseding on Rob Seeker, the general supervisor of the Community Water Area of Orange Region. That’s because it’s much easier to quit watering a lawn compared to it is to quit, claim, showering or doing meals.

“The majority of the cost savings come from outdoor water usage,” Hunter said. Comparisons are made against the exact same month 2 years previous. Winter water usage is lower, considering that outdoor plants don’t need as much water during winter, leaving less margin to reduce water usage by big quantities.

“You do not have much outdoor water make use of to preserve in the cold weather, so it will certainly be very difficult to preserve these kinds of outcomes during the winter months,” Hunter claimed.

Numerous Orange County cities have actually gone above and also past in preserving. Seal Coastline, in spite of already reduced water usage, has managed to cut usage 22 percent since June. Its directed is 8 percent.

The state’s goal is to conserve 1.2 million acre-feet of water by February. With the summer season numbers from June, July as well as August in, the state is a little bit even more compared to midway there.
